Why is fair skin considered to add such facial beauty in India?

I think that sucks. In a way, that's discrimination of skin colour. It really doesn't matter, dude. And the irony is Indian's are NOT fair and pale-skinned by nature. It's just ... a silly obsession. Man, I wish SOMEONE would show our fair-skin obsessors how brown and tanned is fine. Wake up, India, fair skin is NOT a crowning glory !

i saw once a discovery channel program about wooing, marriage , concepts of beauty and traditional beliefs all over the world. they narrated how the money and power add to sexual attraction then went on how the current tradition of tanned beauties came up. according to it the concept came around when tourism and traveling became popular. before that even in west fairer was accepted as better. as the richer people could afford it more often they often travelled a lot. result was tanned skin. and it came to be synonymous of belonging to higher status and power. so much that they now goto parlour to get tan.

they went on to compare opposite concept of beauty in India. accordingly there deduction was that it again a symbol of status. for the working woman or the woman going out in hot sun here are usually of lower strata. they get more and more tanned and become darker. while upper society woman could afford to avoid sun or covered vehicles or palakies. result was that they had fairer skin. you could recognise easily class and background of people by there clothes and how they maintain their skin or other things. the fairer women were more sought after as they were a better class. and then it came to be accepted as a criteria for beauty.

the concept of beauty keeps changing. i do not believe being fair means being more beautiful. facial features and expression makes the difference.

i went to india on holiday last year and i saw alot of ladies who had bleached there skin and was not very nice at all...........they need to be told that dark skin is considered very attractive over here
Reply:Does it have something to do with the Aryan conquest?
Reply:The endemic herbs they use and drinking much water are the secret of beauty. In addition to that they meditate.
Reply:because it's UNIQUE... just like Skinny is beauitful in America because it is UNIQUE.
Reply:In relatively modern India (500-100 years ago), people used to consider power and money worthy of respect.how rich a person was was decided by the amount of work he had to do. in the mughal era, and the nawabs of late, were famous for "not needing to lift a finger". the rich and powerful, therefore, never worked, especially in the sun. The common folk , on the other hand, did hard physical labour in the scorching indian sun. Also , no sun-block creams were available then, so the labourers became tanned. So, it was relatively easy to decide who was poorer by the tan he/she had!!! Hence, the fairer complexion became valued and over time it developed the status of beauty. But dont forget,in India, Krishna the god, is black. In fact, Krishna means black in Sanskrit!! Also the god said to be the most beautiful, Shiva ( "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" ), is dark too ...
Reply:Its an inbuilt program in the minds of these people. Very difficult to change.
