What is fair skin exactly?

I was at Drama camp with a couple of people from my school and in one of the workshops I did, we were supposed to pick somebody you don't know and find something you had in common with them. My coach demonstrated and walked up to me and said that it couldn't be external like saying "We both have fair skin." Meaning that both she and I had fair skin. Now, I am seriously not trying to get attention or anything, but what does "fair" skin mean exactly? Does it mean pale? Or just light skin?

Light skin. Fair has also meant extremely lovely/beautiful. That is a rather outdated use of the word fair, though. We all should know from the Grimm Brothers "Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" Fair does mean beautiful.

I have "fair skin", dark hair and dark eyes. Sometimes I am referred to as pale, which is almost negative. Pale in the English language is a descriptive that is used to describe something that is "less than" what it should be. If something "pales" in comparison, or if someone is ill, they are described as having a "pallor", or being "pale".





I personally prefer light or fair skinned.

I'va always thought "fair" skin is light skin. I'm also what I consider fair. "Pale" has such negative connotations: corpse-like.

Reply:Fair skin means the lightest color of skin. You usually burn easily. And it comes in different tones, warm, neutral and cool. You may have fair or light skin but because of the red in your hair you would also have warm or even neutral toned skin.
Reply:Fair skin is that lovely, creamy pale ivory complexion, it's a compliment, don't lose any sleep over it. Pale, light, fair, all mean the same thing.
