What causes "thin" skin that tears & bleeds easily???

Since I've passed the 55+ age -- I've noticed that if I scratch my skin on my arms, hands %26amp; wrists that my skin tears %26amp; bleeds immediately. Its just as though my skin is paper thin.. whats up with that? HOW do I change, or correct this? I never had this happen until THIS year -- please help! What happens? if I stretch over to pick up something %26amp; my forearm happens to scrape against something, I'm scratched %26amp; suddenly bleeding! Its just as though the top layer of skin just tears open. I often do not even know til I "feel" something %26amp; look down %26amp; there it's been cut %26amp; bleeding and it don't stop right away, not until after applying some pressure for couple minutes or more - then apply band-aid. I'm taking vitamins, eat healthy, haven't done anything different but gained some 20#'s within last 4 yrs. I'm puzzled. I do believe in aromatherapy - lotions - oils %26amp; conditioners ... don't take any medication... have acid reflux, and think I'm a candidate for Fibromyalgia, with my aches %26amp; pains!

I can suggest a Homeopathic remedy for your condition if you can give me your details specifically your individual symptoms apart from this problem what else do you feel.

Are you feeling worse when you usually wake up in the morning ? And are most of your body pains and aches left sided ?

Please put all of what I have asked and any other details and symptoms you can tell me here and your disorder can be cured without any side effects or any sort of complications !

Take care and God bless you !

The same thing happens to my dad and his Dr. said it is normal with aging. I don't have a solution though, sorry.
Reply:This comes with aging. The older one gets the thinner the skin becomes and cause easy bruising. Nothing can stop this.
Reply:I agree with what the other two said. It comes from growing old. I worked in a nursing home and the eldery residents were very susceptible to skin tears, even from just scratching their skin or bumping lightly against something.
Reply:Have you at any time been on prednisone? This drug makes your skin thin over time and extremely prone to tears from just the slightest thing. Prednisone also breaks down the bones in our body.

Have you ever been tested for any type of bleeding disorder? Bleeding disorders can go by for years even decades without ever being diagnosed. Have an Ivy Bleeding Timed test done. This is how I found out that my daughter has von Willebrand's Disease when she was eight years old. The only reason that it was even suspected then was because I asked about a medication that I take that effects the vitamin K in my blood during surgery and wanted to know if the medication that she was on have the same type of effect on her since she was getting ready to have her tonsils taken out.

Go to your doctor and get a full work up to find out what is going on. Take care.
Reply:Are you taking any medicine such as steroid or aspirin? My mom did takes these as she had heart disease and problem with her immune system. These medicines cause her skin very thin and bleed easily. We have asked doctors what to do and they just advise us to take extra-care.
Reply:I don't think there is a cure or anything but i think if you use lotion to keep it from getting dry on top of it becoming thinner i think that would help. I use olay QUENCH it works good on my dry feet and legs....smells good too!!!
